The Berlin Center for the History of Knowledge

The Berlin Center for the History of Knowledge was conceived to support an extensive network of Berlin-based historians of science and, more broadly, of knowledge. As a forum for new and shared research projects as well as for public dialog, the center aims to increase Berlin’s visibility as a site of research potential and to anchor the multidisciplinary topic “history of knowledge” in teaching and research.

The center is the fruit of intensified cooperation launched some years ago between the Freie Universität (FU), the Humboldt Universität (HU), the Technische Universität (TU), and the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (MPIWG). A contract involving the Berlin universities and the Max Planck Gesellschaft has existed since 2011, which has led to the establishment of new professorships as well as to joint staffing decisions. A scholarly advisory committee coordinates the activities of the cooperating partners.

The center’s work of strengthening intra-institutional structures is accompanied by various other forms of cooperation in the areas of research and teaching. In 2013 the center’s partners awarded and appointed eight postdoctoral stipends to international scholars, allowing the institutions to expand their networks in new ways. In addition, the center organizes joint workshops for doctoral candidates; coordinates the publication of its annotated lecture timetable (the KVV, or Kommentiertes Vorlesungsverzeichnis). This details all Berlin-based courses and lectures relating to the fields of history of science and history of knowledge and posts a Berlin calendar for relevant events. There are plans to further develop the center’s activities.

Anja Sattelmacher, Postdoctoral Scholar at the Berlin Center, has received the "Förderpreis der GWMT(Gesellschaft für Geschichte der Naturwissenschaften, der Medizin und der Technik) 2018“.
